Red Hawks

beet sugar
house to the right
is made from
ten damn
red bicycles
turned on
their sides.
eponymous hawks
salt the yard
by claw
and crows leave
winter berries
for cardinals
stuck in the trees.
believe me,
ilex verticillata is astringent, it
slices beaks,
yet they eat it
while rosemary is
savory and
grown by all the roads,
almost pine tar in taste. their purple
flowers hide
the walkway like old dill by
red porch steps
pretending they
are regular evergreens and i
 say on nights like this:
siuil a run, shule a rhoon, shool, shool, shool a roon!
   to keep the hawks
away from cats and geese ever since
